I was tagged by Caro to do the Out of Your Comfort Zone book tag! This tag is especially appropriate because I am participating in Caro’s challenge, which is the Out of Your Comfort Zone Reading Challenge, this year. You can find more information about it here. The original tag was created by emmabooks on YouTube.
1. a book that is an exception when it comes to genres or elements in books you don’t usually like
The book that immediately came to mind for this one was THE GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO VICE & VIRTUE. I am definitely NOT a historical fiction reader, and honestly I almost passed this one up because I assumed I wouldn’t like it because of the genre even though it was gay, but the hype monster convinced me to pick it up and I’m thrilled I did because I loved it.
2. a book you enjoyed from a genre you previously held some stigma about
I used to not be at all interested in the romance genre, mostly because the books I did read were all unpublished and not very good and I thought some of it was uncomfortably erotic and sexual, but man, did I LOVE Helen Hoang’s debut, THE KISS QUOTIENT, last year. I even recommended it to my mom because I liked it so much (she was not a fan, alas). I ended up reading a couple more romances last year, including THE RIGHT SWIPE, which I also adored, and am hoping to experiment more with the genre this year as well.
3. a book you didn’t know was actually out of your comfort zone until you started reading it
This question is really hard, and I am mostly typing this sentence to give myself more time to think about it.
update from 5 minutes later: I still can’t think of something. Maybe I’ll come back to this question. Maybe I won’t.
4. pick a friend or booktuber who motivates you to pick up books you might not normally be interested in
I don’t know if any one person in particular does that for me, but book bloggers in general have really unintentionally encouraged me to give other genres a try, especially romance. I also really like watching different booktubers because I feel like booktubers I follow tend to have a very diverse array of interests in terms of genre.
5. pick a book out of your comfort zone that you would like to read
I’m very interested in reading an adult thriller I got from by Book of the Month box this month, which is called YOU ARE NOT ALONE. It’s about this pair of sisters who are very creepy and a girl they become interested in and apparently want her life for some reason? The summary didn’t make much sense to me but I’m excited about it because the authors are supposed to be very good.
6. a book or genre so outside of what you normally read that you’ll probably never give it a chance
I am probably never going to try to read another sci-fi book set in space. Other than the Lunar Chronicles, I’ve hated every space book I’ve tried, so I think that genre is not for me. I just find it confusing and am not interested in the subject for the most part.
