WWW Wednesday is a book blog meme hosted by Taking On A World of Words where book bloggers answer these questions:
- What are you currently reading?
- What are you reading next?
- What did you just finish reading?
I…really should have DNF’ed this poetry collection. I was super excited for it because the author, Cyrus Parker, is the romantic partner of poet Amanda Lovelace, who I do really like. However, I was not a fan of her husband. His collection was basically the story of a toxic long distance relationship he had followed by his relationship with Amanda Lovelace, but it read more like a cheesy narrative in verse than an actual poetry collection. It was just so cheesy and cliche and none of the poems stuck with me or had any resonance like I expected them to. The ones about Amanda were particularly bad. They really need to stop writing about each other because they become hackneyed saps.
Ahhhh I’m finally reading SAWKILL GIRLS!!!!! But…I’m not sure if I like this one. It’s very weirdly paced, we already know who the killer is so a lot of the suspense is taken out of it, and it’s super slow. On the other hand, the writing itself is super good and atmospheric and creepy and dark and GOOD. Plus, I want to get to the queer romance. So I’ll probably finish this one even though I’m not a huge fan and don’t understand why there is a sentient rock??
I’m probably going to read WHEN WE CAUGHT FIRE next because I’ve been excited about it for so long, but I think I might be more in the mood for the magical realism that will probably be BLANCA & ROJA. I haven’t read an Anna-Marie McLemore book yet despite that she’s exactly the type of writer I think I’d like (aka all characters are queer and MAGIC). So we’ll see what I’m in the mood for this weekend.
