books i want to read but don’t want to READ tag

I was tagged by Caro for this tag, which was created by Jami. This tag is dedicated to all the books you want to or feel like you should read, but when it comes to actually reading them, you just can’t seem to make yourself do it. #bookwormproblems amiright? Yes, I am right.

Onward to the tag:

A book that you feel you need to read because everyone talks about it

THE FOXHOLE COURT–THE FOXHOLE COURT definitely fits the bill for this one for me for this one. I see EVERYONE talking up this book and Neil Josten (sp??) but it’s definitely not something I’d pick up on my own. I haven’t had very good luck with indie-pub’ed books so I tend to avoid them as a rule, which I guess could be considered snobby, but it’s just my experience. Plus, I generally don’t do sports books, or books about the mob, so I just keep putting this one off even though it’s on my Kindle (which is good, because then I don’t have to look at that horrible cover). Even though it’s gay, I’m just not super interested in this series but everyone talks about it so I feel like I should at least try it.

A book thats really long

ILLUMINAE–Um…ILLUMINAE, anyone? I have actually tried to read this book twice, but both times I got stuck at about 100 pages. Partially it’s because I can’t understand the story because space books aren’t my thing, but also, IT’S HUGE!! It intimidates me so much.

A book you’ve owned/had on your TBR for too long

WHAT TO SAY NEXT–Literally so many. It’s embarrassing. But I guess I’ll go with Julie Buxbaum’s second book, WHAT TO SAY NEXT. I ADORED her first book, TELL ME THREE THINGS, and was utterly psyched to get her next book as an ARC, but I never read it for some reason?? But I still think I would enjoy it because I really like her writing and her romances.

A book that is β€˜required’ reading (eg, school text, really popular classic – something you feel obligated to read!)

THE GREAT GATSBY–I know, it’s shameful that I haven’t read this book. I’m completely embarrassed that I never read this. But I was never assigned it and I just don’t pick up classics on my own??

A book that intimidates you

HOUSE OF LEAVES–I’ve had this on my shelves for an embarrassingly long time. I’ve tried to read it, but it was just so long and the format was super bizarre. It’s about a house that’s bigger on the inside than it is on the outside and is supposed to be mega creepy. I heard about it because I liked Mark Z. Danielewski’s sister Poe’s music.

A book you think might be slow

AUTOBOYOGRAPHY–This one might be a shocker to some people and I am totally here for the bi writer energy of this book, but contemporaries that are over 400 pages like this book tend to have pacing problems, i. e., are super slow. I still really want to read this one and have had it on my TBR for a long time because of the aforementioned bi writer energy, but I keep putting it off for some reason.

A book you need to be in the right mood for

REALLY ANY POETRY BOOK.Β The poetry mood does strike me sometimes, but if I try to read poetry when I’m not in the mood it’s usually because I’m just trying to bust through it so I can add another book to my Goodreads challenge and get ahead, not because I want to actually read it. So I have to be mindful of that.

A book you’re unsure if you will like

HEARTLESS–I bought two editions of this book because I loved the cover so much and also the OwlCrate white edition was just irresistible, but I keep putting it off. Part of the reason is because I’m worried it won’t live up to my expectations. But also I’m worried I won’t like it because I had part of it spoiled for me while looking up quotes for a display at work, so I’m worried that will kill the whole book for me.

    1. omg I thought I was the only one! I see all these gushing reviews yet they all seem to ignore the fact that that cover is…awful??

  1. The Foxhole Court series turned to be one of my favorite reads this year! I read it not really knowing anything or expecting anything but it really surprised me πŸ˜€ And yeah, the covers are not that great haha!

Autoboyography is also a great read! I didn’t feel like it was slow-paced. For me, the story line has a nice flow and I got to see the characters evolve. Plus the LGBTQ+ rep here is superb! It talked a lot about religion and sexuality so wonderfully.

If you’re interested, I’ve got a series review for The Foxhole Court and a book review for Autoboyography! πŸ˜€

    1. I’m glad autoboygraphy is not actually slow. I just always worry when contemporaries are over 400 pages because they tend to be on the slow side. But I was super excited for it when it came out because of the bi rep and never read it, but now I feel like I frequently see other bloggers talking about it so maybe I’ll end up checking it out. thanks πŸ™‚

  2. Pssst…you can skip The Great Gatsby. It’s one of those classics that’s like, “Well, I think that was worthwhile? Um, three stars.”

I feel super hesitant about The Foxhole Court, too! On one hand, I’m like, “Yay gay!” On the other, I’m like, “Ugh, sports.”

  3. So glad to see that you decided to do the Tag!! πŸ₯° I loved Illuminae, so I’d recommend it for when you’re in the mood for a sci-fi books – the unique format helped me get through it, but it is a long book. I’m also unsure if I’ll like Heartless … I have loved Marissa Meyer’s books before, but this retelling seems different!

  4. I read The Great Gatsby before the movie came out and I was not impressed. I actually enjoyed This Side of Paradise much more, which is basically F. Scott Fitzgerald writing about himself in a fictional format. I say skip The Great Gatsby!

  5. This tag is such a mood lol! I’ve been putting off so many books I just keep adding stuff to my TBR and then reading something that I pick up at random…

I’ve been weighting whether to read Foxhole Court as well. It has so much hype but I also heard mixed opinions so I may pass it… And Gatsby… Well, I don’t think I will ever get to this one but a girl can hope πŸ˜‚

I didn’t feel that Autoboyography was slow? There were a lot of ups and downs and the bi rep was handed really well 😊
